In 1982, OMEGA launched the first Constellation to feature the radical and enduring “Griffes” or claws, which immediately placed the watch line among the ranks of the world’s most instantly identifiable timepieces. OMEGA redesigned the entire Constellation family last year and in 2010 is proud to introduce two of its newest members.

In timeless white
This white Constellation Ladies Quartz 35 mm timepiece with a polished 18 Ct red gold case and a white alligator leather strap is an ideal accessory for any wardrobe.  Adding to its allure are the eleven single-cut diamond hour markers which are graduated, increasing in size on each side of the dial from the round facetted date window at six o’clock. Shades of black and grey
Another of the year’s dramatic offerings is the Constellation Ladies Quartz 35 mm with a black alligator leather strap and a shaded grey dial. This striking watch has a bezel paved with 34 full-cut diamonds. Its eleven single-cut diamond hour markers, which are increasingly graduated from the round facetted date window at six o’clock, are in sharp relief to the supernova pattern on the dial which emanates from the Constellation star.Both the shaded grey and the white models are powered by OMEGA’s quartz calibre 1532. Their vertically-brushed casebacks are embossed with the Constellation Observatory medallion. Their polished facetted hour and minute hands are coated with white Super-LumiNova, which makes them easy to read in all light conditions.

The Constellation Double Eagle watches have long celebrated OMEGA’s close relationship with the Royal and Ancient Game of golf.

One of the first things one perceives about the Omega De Ville 4-Counters Co-Axial Chronograph watch, is the extent to which finely brushed stainless steel plays in its construction. This understated material is used for almost every surface of the complex 41 mm case and concave bezel, as well as the intricate bracelet. The latter, however, does feature four slender stainless steel links that showcase a brilliant high polish–a decidedly elegant touch which produces a nearly perfect degree of dressy refinement. Equally attractive is the complex dial: the section which contains the four subdials is recessed below the primary surface, indices and hands are exactingly beveled to capture light, and sparing accents of red emphasize sportiness as well as sophistication. Two tastefully located windows, one below the applied Omega logo and the other at 6 o’clock, showcase the day of the week and date, respectively. The chronograph mechanism records elapsed minutes, hours, and even days (up to 7), as well as continuously running small seconds; the latter is clearly demarcated from the other chronograph functions by a skeletonized dagger-shaped hand.

Secure beneath the stainless steel caseback of the De Ville 4-Counters watch is the self-winding Omega Calibre 3890. This mechanical movement presents a number of horologically desirable elements. Not only does it showcase the now-famous Omega Co-Axial Escapement–a revolutionary invention which minimizes friction, promotes long-term precision, and extends intervals between services–it also incorporates a freely sprung balance to optimize isochronism and resistance to shocks. Power reserve of the spring barrel is a highly respectable 52 hours, and the rapid balance beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour enables the chronograph to record elapsed time to the nearest 1/8th second. Decorative refinements of the Omega 3890 include Cotes de Geneve patterns on the bridges and central winding mass, as well as circular graining on the mainplate.

The Omega De Ville 4-Counters Co-Axial Chronograph watch is water resistant to 100 meters, and features a subtly curved crystal manufactured from scratch-resistant sapphire. The triple-folding clasp on the stainless steel bracelet displays the world famous Omega symbol in 18-karat red gold.

Omega has announced the launch of the Seamaster Planet Ocean Liquidmetal® Limited Edition, the world’s first watch to bond ceramics and Liquidmetal®.Swatch Group researchers collaborating with OMEGA’s product development team have created a striking ceramic diving bezel whose numbers and scaling, made of the Liquidmetal® alloy, appear in stunning silvery contrast to the black ceramic background. The colour of the ceramic dial perfectly matches that of the bezel. The result is an aesthetic wonder only made possible by several new and innovative processes.

The remarkable world premiere is being launched in a limited edition of 1948 pieces in honour of the year OMEGA launched its popular Seamaster watch line.

Liquidmetal®: seamless bonding, remarkable hardness

The Liquidmetal® alloy is an amorphous metal – a metallic material with a disordered, non-crystalline atomic structure. Its fusion temperature is half that of conventional titanium alloys but when it is cooled, its hardness is three times as great as that of stainless steel. Its amorphous structure allows it to bond seamlessly with the ceramic bezel.
The Liquidmetal® is a bulk metallic glass alloy consisting of five elements: zirconium, titanium, copper, nickel and beryllium. A bulk metallic glass can, by virtue of its low critical cooling rate, be formed into a structure with a thickness of more than a tenth of a millimetre. Zirconium is an important constituent part both of the Liquidmetal® alloy and of the ceramic material which is made of zirconium dioxide (Zr02).

The final, perfectly smooth bezel is particularly resistant to scratching and corrosion because of the hardness of the two components.

The union of ceramics and Liquidmetal® at OMEGA

First, ceramic rings are formed. The numbers and the fine lines of the minute scaling are then engraved into these ceramic bezel rings and polished.  The alloy is heated and pressed into the cavities in the ceramic material after which any excess Liquidmetal® is removed. The Liquidmetal® can be manipulated at a lower temperature than metals normally used in watchmaking so the heating process does not damage the ceramic material.

The Liquidmetal® numbers and scales are then satin brushed. Because the ceramic is a harder material than the alloy, the satin brushing of the fine details can be done without affecting the ceramic bezel. The numbers and scaling then appear in bold, vivid contrast to the glossy ceramic background.

These movements, which have been heralded for their long-term chronometric performance, are perfectly complemented by the ceramic and Liquidmetal® alloy components which are incredibly resistant to corrosion and scratching. The result is pure OMEGA: a design premiere which will retain its appearance indefinitely, blended with innovative Co-Axial technology.

Omega now introduces another member of the family, the Seamaster Aqua Terra Co-Axial Chronograph.

Like the rest of the collection, its trademark feature is its “Teak Concept” dial whose vertical lines are reminiscent of the wooden decks on luxury boats. The Seamaster Aqua Terra Co-Axial Chronograph’s luxury-finished movement combines Omega’s exclusive Co-Axial calibre 3313 and a free sprung balance for outstanding long-term performance. Its precision is confirmed by its COSC-certification as a chronometer. The self-winding watch is also equipped with a column-wheel chronograph mechanism.
The Seamaster Aqua Terra Co-Axial Chronograph is available in four case materials: 18 Ct white gold, 18 Ct red gold, stainless steel or, in the bi-coloured version pictured here featuring 18 Ct red gold and stainless steel. The watches are available either with Omega’s patented screw-and-pin system bracelets in corresponding metals or with integrated alligator straps.

The polished, brushed 44 mm case is water resistant to 150 metres (500 feet) and has a polished bezel. The matt polished screw-in crown is embossed with a polished OMEGA logo and the case features polished chronograph pushers. The Seamaster Aqua Terra Co-Axial Chronograph has a domed, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides, as well as a polished screw-in caseback whose sapphire crystal makes it possible to see the Co-Axial movement at work.

The 18 Ct white gold model features a teak-black dial; the 18 Ct red gold and the bi-colour watches have teak-grey dials. All of them are sun brushed from the centre and have black sub-dials. The stainless steel edition is available either in vertically-brushed teak-grey with black sub-dials or in teak-ivory with silver sub-dials.

The Seamaster Aqua Terra Co-Axial Chronograph has 18 Ct gold facetted central hour and minute hands coated with white Super-LumiNova and a central chronograph seconds hand. Its small seconds counter is at 9H, with the date window at 4H30.  The other sub-dials are the 30-minute recorder at 3H and the 12-hour recorder at 6H.

The dial has applied 18 Ct gold indexes with diamond-polished sides which are also coated with white Super-LumiNova. The Omega name and logo on the dial are made of diamond-brushed applied 18 Ct gold.

Now OMEGA is introducing an updated version of the classic and instantly recognizable wristwatch. Equipped with a Co-Axial calibre 8500, the new Ploprof 1200M is, as its name suggests, water resistant to an astounding 1200 metres (4000 feet) and it artfully combines its ancestor’s legendary features with OMEGA’s state-of-the-industry Co-Axial technology.

The Ploprof 1200M is available either with a brushed mesh “Sharkproof” bracelet or on a rubber strap in a choice of black or orange. The bracelet, with its double extension system, is fitted with OMEGA’s new diving safety clasp whose pinned links allow precise adjustments to 18 positions. It also features an extra divers’ extension to 26 mm so that the watch can be worn comfortably over a diving suit.

The OMEGA Co-Axial Ploprof 1200M bears a strong resemblance to its famous ancestor and it carries on the traditions of robust reliability and water resistance which have always defined OMEGA’s divers’ watches. But there are also some remarkable improvements: for example, the watch is driven by the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8500 with a free sprung balance. This movement, launched in 2007, was created from inception by OMEGA and is one of the key elements in the revolution in mechanical watchmaking which has been taking place at the company since 1999.

The first manned lunar landing on the 20th of July, 1969 was the greatest, most dramatic scientific achievement in human history. Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon’s surface at 02:56 GMT on the 21st of July. Nineteen minutes later he was joined by Buzz Aldrin, who was wearing his OMEGA Speedmaster and a legend was born. An interesting footnote: the electronic timing system on the Lunar Module was not functioning correctly so Armstrong had left his watch aboard as a reliable backup.

Two OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11 “40th Anniversary” Limited Edition watches celebrate the adventure: one in stainless steel and (7,969 pieces); the other in platinum and 18 Ct yellow gold (69 pieces).

The stainless steel Limited Edition

The distinctive timepieces are powered by OMEGA’s calibre 1861, which shares its lineage with the calibre 321 used in the original Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch. The stainless steel casebody is delivered with a stainless steel bracelet which has been upgraded to include OMEGA’s patented screw and pin system.

The black dial also recalls that of the Moon Watch but has some key differences. The small seconds counter (sub-dial) is a medallion which features an adaptation of Apollo 11’s famous mission patch: an eagle descends to the lunar surface with an olive branch representing peace in its claws. In the distance, far above the horizon, the earth is visible. The patch, interestingly, was designed by Michael Collins who remained in the Apollo 11 capsule as Command Module Pilot while his colleagues Armstrong and Aldrin were in the Lunar Module and on the moon.

The watch’s hour, minute and the red-tipped chronograph seconds hands are coated with Super-LumiNova. The minute and hour chronograph counter hands are white and there is a brushed, rhodium-plated small seconds hand in attractive relief to the slightly recessed medallion on the counter.

One small step

Below the words “OMEGA Speedmaster PROFESSIONAL” on the dial, the legend 02:56 GMT – the exact time that Neil Armstrong made his “one small step” onto the moon – is displayed in red.

The 40th Anniversary Limited Edition’s dial is protected by Hesalite, the same robust, shatter-proof acrylic crystal found on the original Moon Watch. Hesalite is ideally suited for use in space – there is no chance that it can break apart and send potentially dangerous fragments into the low-gravity environment. A small, distinctive OMEGA logo has been etched evocatively inside the Hesalite crystal.

The Apollo 11 “Eagle” mission patch is stamped on the caseback along with the words, “THE FIRST WATCH WORN ON THE MOON”, the limited edition number (0000/7969), and “July 21, 1969”, the date Armstrong and Aldrin first stepped onto the moon’s surface at 02:56, the time which is printed on the dial.

The OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11 “40th Anniversary” Limited Edition is delivered in a black presentation box which also includes a 42 mm sterling silver medal (the same diameter as the watch) featuring an engraving of the mission patch on one side with the words “APOLLO 11, 40th ANNIVERSARY”. On the reverse side, the medal is engraved, “THE EAGLE HAS LANDED”; “LAUNCHED JULY 16 1969”; “LANDED JULY 20, 1969”; and “RETURNED, JULY 24, 1969” along with OMEGA’s name and logo. Also in the presentation box is a certificate of authenticity and an envelope containing a black polishing cloth printed with information commemorating the historic space flight.

The platinum Limited Edition – A very limited release with unlimited luxury

A platinum version of the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11 “40th Anniversary” watch is also being released in an edition limited to 69 pieces. The casebody and screw and pin bracelet are made of platinum and the medallion on the small seconds counter is made of 18 Ct yellow gold as is the small seconds hand. The hour and minute hands as well as the 30 minute and 12 hour counter hands are made of platinum.

This elegant version of the watch is also delivered with a 42 mm 18 Ct yellow gold medal, in a limited and numbered edition, with the mission patch engraved on one side along with the words “APOLLO 11, 40th ANNIVERSARY”. The reverse side features the engraved legend: “THE EAGLE HAS LANDED”; “LAUNCHED JULY 16 1969”; “LANDED JULY 20, 1969”; and “RETURNED, JULY 24, 1969” along with OMEGA’s name and logo.

The caseback features the mission patch in 18 Ct gold with the words “Apollo 11 40th Anniversary”. Around the platinum outer ring of the caseback appear the words, “The first Watch Worn on the Moon”, “PT950” – a reference to the watch’s platinum content, and “July 21, 1969”, the date that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the lunar surface.

The platinum version of the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11 “40th Anniversary” features a box-form scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides and the OMEGA calibre 1861 movement.

A subtle reminder on the small medallion on the dial indicates just how special this watch is: the limited edition number (00/69) is engraved at the base of the small mission patch on the dial.

The platinum Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11 “40th Anniversary” Limited Edition is delivered in a black presentation box. The limited edition number (00/69) is displayed on the top cover of the box along with the Apollo 11 mission patch. The steel feet are engraved with “1969”, the year the Apollo 11 mission took place and “2009”, the year the world commemorated its 40th anniversary and the year the watch was produced. The box also includes a certificate of authenticity.

Omega’s Speedmaster chronograph was first “flight qualified” by NASA for all manned space missions on March 1st, 1965. It was the only wristwatch to ever withstand all of the U.S. space agency’s tests of zero gravity, magnetic fields, extreme shocks, vibrations and temperatures ranging from -18 to +93 degrees Celsius.

Being the watch that recorded man’s first steps on the moon, and the only watch to be worn on the moon ever since, secures Omega, and the Speedmaster, a prestigious spot in history.
