23 September 2009, Audemars Piguet is honored to host a charity auction dinner together with ambassador and Formula 1 driver, Jarno Trulli for the benefits of ‘Abruzzo nel Cuore’ (Abruzzo in the Heart) Foundation. Trulli who was raised in Pescara, was plagued by the sights and at the magnitude caused by the deadly April earthquake and felt responsible to spearhead a fundraising campaign to help his people.

Pledging its support and commitment, Audemars Piguet Manufacture created the unique “Royal Oak Abruzzo Tourbillon and Chronograph” timepiece in sandblasted titanium especially for this charitable occasion. Alongside, generous items were donated by fellow drivers and auctioned for this evening in Singapore:

Themed as an Italian evening, guests were treated with countless supreme selection of Antipasti. Italian porcini mushrooms, white truffle were carefully handpicked to project its lavish essence. Specialty mains were treated with nonnegotiable rich Italian traditional flavor in making. Desserts were sweetened by the Apricot Crostata blended perfectly with ‘Jarno Rosso’ wine ice cream.

Renowned for his vineyard from the hills of Alanno in the province of Pescara, Trulli passionately shared his second love with the privileged guests. Specially flown in from Italy, these wines were carefully chosen as the perfect accompaniment to the delightful delicacies prepared by Senso Ristorante – a divine food and wine combination. Each guest also received a bottle of Abruzzo Coste delle Plaie as a memento for this unforgettable occasion.

Graced by Dr Folco de Luca Gabrielli, Ambassador of Italy, a pulsating and responsive auction took its strike under the lead of Mr Tim Bourne (Christie’s). Over S$400,000.00 was raised for Abruzzo with the Audemars Piguet Timepiece auctioned at S$305,000.00. As a token of appreciation from Audemars Piguet, each winning bid was presented with the exclusive Royal Oak Table clock powered by an 8-day power reserve worth S$5,800.00.

While sensational roars from the stream of Lamborghinis and Ferraris kicks in, the spirit of racing have also came early for Audemars Piguet, the night was accompanied by the very charming and spontaneous Formula 1 Racers; Jarno Trulli, Rubens Barrichello and Sébastien Buemi.

A chronograph timepiece enriches the 2009 Audemars Piguet Millenary watch collection. The opulent oval form of the Millenary–an evocation of the great Roman Coliseum–has given a stately housing to everything from a basic self-winding movement with a date function, up to virtuosic haute horlogerie masterpieces such as the “Tradition of Excellence” Cabinet No. 5 and Millenary MC-12 Tourbillon. The addition of a basic chronograph affirms the traditional dedication by Audemars Piguet to offering a comprehensive selection of timepieces covering the gamut of horological specialties.

The Audemars Piguet 2009 Millenary Chronograph watch features a case in 18-karat pink gold measuring 47mm x 42mm; masterfully executed brushed metal surfaces exude understated elegance; the bezel, strap lugs, and elliptical chronograph buttons present an alluring, luxurious contrast. The two-zone Millenary dial is exceptional in its intricate detail and conveys an appealing mixture of classicism and Baroque extravagance; applied Roman numerals in polished rose gold flare expressively outwards on the concentrically grooved black section which contains the three silvery chronograph subdials. The rich brown outer dial segment is adorned with the brilliant blue tachymeter scale, which bends outward in the opposite direction of the Roman numeral hour markers. The gold caseback is secured down with screws, and displays the engraved Millenary logo.

Ticking inside the Audemars Piguet Millenary Chronograph watch is the refined self-winding Caliber 2385, one of the world’s slimmest automatic chronograph movements with a column-wheel and a fully integrated mechanism. A balance frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour enables the chronograph feature to record independent periods of time within 30 minutes or up to 12 hours, with 1/6th second precision. A valuable supplemental function is the rapidly adjustable date display. Power reserve of the barrel is 40 hours. In all, the Caliber 2385 comprises more than 300 parts, each painstakingly finished by hand in Audemars Piguet’s Le Brassus atelier.

The Audemars Piguet Millenary Chronograph watch is fitted with a flat sapphire crystal, and a crocodile leather strap with blue stitching of the same hue as the dial tachymeter scale. A pink gold folding clasp shaped in the form of the Audemars Piguet initials ensures a comfortable and elegant fitment to the wrist. The watch is rated water resistant to 20 meters.

The resulting shimmering dusky effect is complemented by the bezel and studs in shiny black ceramic, as well as vulcanised rubber-moulded crown and pushpieces, while the bright yellow colour of the numerals, tachometric scale, central chronograph seconds hand and stitching on the strap create a spectacularly bold contrast against the backdrop of this palette of black shades.

A pioneer in the use of original materials, the Manufacture masterfully combines them here while placing them in the service of a sporty and ultra-masculine sports timepiece that is a fascinating blend of high technology, contemporary daring and horological mastery.

The Calibre 3126/3840 self-winding movement equipping this new Royal Oak Offshore also contributes to its impressive performances by guaranteeing impressive sturdiness, reliability and rating precision. The barrel-spring supplies constant force ensuring 60 hours of power reserve, while the stability of the movement is further reinforced by the cross-through balance bridge.

The balance is also fitted with eight inertia blocks enabling extremely fine adjustment, while a 22-carat gold ball-bearing mounted rotor ensures bidirectional automatic winding. Finally, all the parts are finished and decorated by hand with bevelling, Côtes de Genève, circular-graining – with each of these stages performed in complete harmony with tradition. The AP monogram and the Audemars and Piguet family crests are engraved on the oscillating weight.
